The most expensive thing on the planet isn’t a luxury sports car. It’s also not a house, or even that thing called Plutonium that you see in the action movies. No, the most expensive material on the planet is called antimatter. Currently, a gram of antimatter goes for 62.5 trillion USD. Let me put that into perspective for you; all the billionaires in the world together can’t buy a cup of the stuff.

What Is Antimatter?

Okay, so here is where we bring out our JHS science. Antimatter is the opposite of matter. The subatomic particles have the opposite properties of those found in regular matter. A normal electron has a charge of -1, while the anti-electron has a charge of +1. Building on that, antimatter should be able to form anti-elements. So you could theoretically have anti-water (source: Thought Co).

When matter reacts with antimatter, it creates a reaction that releases a lot of energy (boom!). Currently, the artificial production of antimatter takes place in a particle accelerator. However, the production costs are too expensive to sustain. It costs hundreds of millions to produce just about 1 billionth of a gram (source: Wikipedia).
